TOPIC 01 4 QUESTIONS

Getting started

Understand the essentials before choosing your eSIM.

What exactly is a travel eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that can be installed on a compatible phone. A travel eSIM lets you use a selected mobile data plan abroad without swapping your usual physical SIM card.

How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?

Check your phone’s SIM or mobile network settings for an option to add an eSIM. Compatibility can vary by model and region. Our Compatible Devices guide explains how to check.

Does my phone need to be network-unlocked?

Yes, for most travel eSIMs your phone must be unlocked to use another provider’s plan. If you are unsure, check with the network that supplied your phone.

Can I keep my usual phone number?

Usually, yes. Many dual-SIM phones can keep your usual line active while using the travel eSIM for data. Calls or texts on your home line may incur roaming charges, so check your provider’s terms.

TOPIC 02 5 QUESTIONS

Plans & coverage

Choose the right data allowance and destination.

What is the difference between Country, Regional and Global eSIMs?

A Country eSIM covers one country, a Regional eSIM covers specified countries within a region, and a Global eSIM covers a wider list of destinations. Global does not mean every country: always check the exact coverage listed for your chosen plan.

How much data should I choose?

That depends on how you travel. Maps and messaging typically use less data than video streaming or large downloads. Compare the data allowance, validity period and coverage before deciding.

Do travel eSIM plans include calls and SMS?

Some plans are data-only, while others may include calling or messaging. Check the features listed for your chosen plan rather than assuming calls and SMS are included.

When does the validity period begin?

This depends on the specific plan. Some start when installed; others start when the eSIM first connects to a supported network. Check the plan’s activation and validity terms before installing.

Can I add more data later?

Top-ups are available on some eSIM plans, but not all. Check whether your chosen plan supports additional data before purchasing.

TOPIC 03 4 QUESTIONS

Installation & activation

Set up correctly, then connect at the right time.

How do I install my eSIM?

Connect to reliable Wi-Fi, open your phone’s eSIM settings and follow the QR-code or manual installation instructions supplied with your plan. See our step-by-step installation guide for iPhone, Samsung and Google Pixel.

Can I install my eSIM before I travel?

Often you can, but check your plan’s activation rules first. Some plans begin their validity period when installed, while others begin when they connect abroad.

What if my QR code is on the phone I am using?

Depending on the device, you may be able to import a saved QR image or enter the installation details manually. Follow your phone’s instructions and use only the details provided with your plan.

Do I need Wi-Fi to install an eSIM?

A reliable internet connection is normally needed to download and install an eSIM profile. Wi-Fi is a good option before travel.

TOPIC 04 4 QUESTIONS

Using your eSIM abroad

A few settings help keep your connection simple.

How do I use my travel eSIM for mobile data?

Once your plan is ready, select your travel eSIM as the mobile data line in your phone’s settings. Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM only if the plan instructions require it.

Should I leave data roaming switched on?

Follow the provider’s instructions for the travel eSIM. Do not turn on roaming for your usual home SIM unless you intend to use it and understand any charges.

Can I use my phone as a personal hotspot?

Hotspot or tethering support depends on your device and the individual eSIM plan. Check the plan details before relying on it.

What should I do with the eSIM when I return home?

You can normally switch mobile data back to your usual SIM and turn off the travel eSIM line. Avoid deleting an eSIM you may still need, as some profiles cannot be reinstalled or transferred.

TOPIC 05 4 QUESTIONS

Troubleshooting & support

Find your next step when something is unclear.

My eSIM is installed, but I have no mobile data. What should I check?

Make sure you are in a covered destination, your travel eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data, and roaming is set as instructed. Restart the phone if needed. Also check any APN or network-selection guidance provided with your plan.

My QR code will not scan. What can I do?

Check your internet connection and that the code is readable. Look for a manual installation option. Do not repeatedly delete or reinstall a profile without checking the provider’s instructions.

Can I move an eSIM to a different phone?

Not always. Some travel eSIM profiles can only be installed once or on one device. Check the supplier’s transfer and replacement rules before changing phones.
